How to choose a 3D printer filament?

3D printing is becoming more and more popular and widespread. However, to achieve the right effect, not only the parameters of the 3D printer itself are important, but also the 3D printer cartridges. Choosing the right filament is also extremely important. Therefore, it is worth knowing what it is, what its types are and what to consider when choosing. All this to ensure that the printing effect is truly satisfying.

Filaments - what are they?

Since its emergence several years ago, 3D printing has maintained a constant struggle to use new materials. The goal is clear. The more materials that can be 3D printed, the more sectors will be able to implement the use of 3D printers.

Before answering specifically what a 3D printing filament is, it is necessary to discuss the process of operation of 3D printers. Thanks to a 3D printer, it is possible to print three-dimensional, physical objects. All thanks to the use of FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) technology. As the name suggests, this technology involves the deposition of fused material. In other words, during the printing process, the base material is melted and then embedded in a specific shape. To make this possible, it is necessary to use thermoplastic material. It is a material that changes its shape under the influence of appropriate temperature and pressure. In the case of 3D printing, thermoplastic materials are referred to as 3D printer filaments. These are thin lines with a thickness of 1.77 mm to 2.85 mm. These veins are heated appropriately during printing and then arranged in layers using a special nozzle in the selected shape.

Types of 3D filaments

Today, there are many types of filaments available on the market. The most popular are three. The first of them is ABS filament. It is made of artificial polymer. Its use requires adequate ventilation of the room. This is because, as a result of high temperatures, it emits toxic fumes. Its advantage is its relatively low price. It is also characterized by high durability. Structures created using them are rarely damaged. The second type of filament is TPU filament. It is made of a copolymer consisting of hard and soft segments. This makes printed elements made of TPU filament highly flexible. However, TPU filaments have their drawbacks. First of all, it is the high price and the fact that printing using them takes quite a long time. The third type of filaments are PLA filaments. This filament is very popular due to its ecological properties. It is made from sugar cane or corn flour. This means that it is a fully biodegradable material. Moreover, unlike ABS filaments, they do not emit any toxins during printing. Therefore, these are safe filaments. PLA filaments are characterized by high durability, but at the same time much less flexibility compared to previous filaments.

Filament 3D printer

In recent years, new materials have been developed that are optimized for use in 3D printing. In this way, materials based on PLA appeared, but with components imitating wood, copper, bronze. Materials that did not add professional value to 3D prints, but generated various finishes that are in high demand.

Filaments for 3D printing

TPU has caused great changes in the concept of 3D printing. A flexible material that allowed us to reach sectors such as fashion, sports, mechanics... The limitations are the SHORE A class, which 3D printers with filament can achieve based on their own technology. In this sense, CoLiDo X3045, with its large print size, is perfectly suited for these materials.

PA (nylon), PC (polycarbonate), ASA, HIPS and PET-G have already taken 3D printing to another level. Advanced technical filaments that provide advanced technical functions. Materials that make 3D printing a global production system. However, the use of these filaments implies the need for more professional and reliable 3D printers. As an example of these printers, we give Tumaker NX Pro and Tumaker NX Pro DUAL, with the possibility of using filament spools up to 8 kg.

Filaments for a 3D printer

In the search for new materials for 3D printing, one of the most frequently used paths was the development of mixed materials. Materials reinforced with fiberglass, carbon fiber, minerals strengthen… These extremely resistant materials with thermal, flame retardant or chemical properties are often difficult to print and require abrasion-resistant nozzles. The need for professional 3D printers to use it is becoming more and more visible.

The 3D printer cartridge matters

Choosing the right filament depends primarily on your budget and individual needs. Depending on what exactly you want to print and for what purpose should determine the choice of a specific filament. A good solution is to test each of them and choose the one that best meets your expectations.
